Stephen G. Rye
President, Chief Investment Officer
Steve is the Firmโs President and Chief Investment Officer, responsible for overseeing all aspects of portfolio management and advisory activities. As Chairman of the Northern Capital Investment Committee, he oversees the Firmโs investment portfolios, asset allocation, asset/liability management, and risk management practices.
Steve is recognized as “an advisor to investment advisors,” and a leading expert in bonds. His integrated consultative approach includes serving on the investment committees of several of the Firm’s clients.
Over the span of his 30-year career in fixed income, he has advised and performed investment management, asset/liability management, trading, and analytics development for Banks, Broker/Dealers, Investment Management Companies, Government Agencies, Supranational Organizations, and Foreign Central Banks.
Prior to joining Northern Capital, Steve held diverse positions of responsibility, gaining a unique perspective on the financial markets. As Managing Director, Institutional Client Group at Deutsche Bank, he advised institutional clients with combined assets over $1.5 trillion in all aspects of fixed income. He also served as an Executive Director at Morgan Stanley, where he was responsible for a team structuring interest rate derivatives to mitigate risk and hedge large complex investment portfolios.
While Senior Portfolio Director at Freddie Mac, Steve identified and hedged interest rate risk in Freddie Mac’s $600 billion mortgage portfolio. He was one of five senior experts that created and implemented one of the worldโs largest debt issuance initiatives, the Reference Note program.
As an institutional trader at Fidelity Investments, Steve was responsible for security selection for many of the fixed income mutual funds that totaled over $120 billion. He advised Fidelity portfolio managers on specific bond selection and relative value opportunities and transacted on behalf of the funds.
Earlier in his career, he co-founded the fixed income analytics group while Vice President, Government Bond Trading at Dean Witter. Throughout his career, Steve has designed computer trading and relative value systems and has developed many of the portfolio tools in use at Northern Capital.
Steve was awarded an NCAA Division I basketball scholarship and received his degree from American University in Washington, DC.
